Edinburgh University Exmoor Pony Trekking Section is a non-profit, student run organisation and a university society, running treks for students and the general public. Any level of rider can come and experience this cheeky native breed whilst enjoying our beautiful surroundings from horseback. We offer a unique trekking experience, taking the ponies straight from their field onto the hills (no roads involved on any of our usual treks), and allowing you to join in with caring for your pony before and after the trek.

Jimmy Speed, Professor of Anatomy at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, and his wife Mary Etherington donated their group of Exmoor ponies to the vet students of the University. While still having close ties to the vet school, the society has opened its doors to all students of the University of Edinburgh to be part of this unique society. We are a University of Edinburgh society and a TRSS approved trekking section and all trek leaders undergo a year's training to ensure a high standard of care for both trekkers and ponies.

From September to June, members of the public can enjoy trekking at weekends in the beautiful Pentland countryside on Edinburgh's doorstep. In the summer months, treks are run everyday except Friday further north in Glendevon, Clackmannanshire. All the money made from the treks goes back into the care of the ponies and the running of the business. Trek leaders are not paid.

Our herd is currently made up of fourteen Exmoor ponies ranging from 5 to 18 years old. Anyone can come trekking and we cater for all levels of riding ability. However, due to the size of the ponies, we cannot allow anybody over 12 and a half stone (79kg) to ride (subject to change in winter). We also insist that any child under 12yrs old is accompanied by an adult.
